GET TO KNOW BRIDGWATER AND BRIDGY GALLERY

Bridgwater is a hidden gem found in the heart of the Somerset countryside; a truly unique place filled with character. From its colourful locals, its small-town charm to even its cultural and historic significance, there’s always something interesting to see, learn or experience here. A standout sight that simply cannot be missed is our world-renowned illuminated carnival, not only is it widely regarded as the world’s largest but also contains the unique event of squibbing, a firework display like no other, that can be seen only at the climax of carnival night or at the lighting of the Christmas decorations on the town’s iconic bridge later in the year. In celebration of such an occasion, our resident artist Bridget has created a number of paintings based on the breadth of carts and costumes displayed over recent years, that will be on full display at the gallery each carnival season, with prints and cards available throughout the year.

Nice to know

We would be remiss not to mention some of the surprising factoids about our humble home, for example Bridgwater was the first docks in the UK to import pineapples, we were the first town in England to officially petition to abolish slavery in the Empire and we of course are the home town of the legendary Admiral Blake and one of England’s romantic poets. Now these are most certainly not the only noteworthy things about Bridgwater, the town’s history is rich to say the least, but we would like to encourage each of you to go out and find what hidden tales and joys there are, you might just learn something that you can teach us!

Our gallery

Being in such an old settlement, it’s to no surprise that we are lucky enough to be in a building with such a historic legacy. Before us, our lovely building has housed many others, it has been a coach house, a stable, a carpenter’s workshop and even something so small but helpful as being the holding place for the Saint Mary’s steeple ladders. In fact, we were surprised to learn just how old this building is, the first walls dating from the time when there were only open fields around it, in an area that had not yet been given its namesake.

Everyone is welcome

If you pay us a visit in person, feel free to ask the owner, Bridget, for a tour of the grounds, as there is much we can tell and show you. Or, if you prefer, come by for a nice hot drink and a quiet look around the gallery or refreshing ice cream out in our sunny sitting area with your friends. All are welcome at the gallery, whether you are disabled and need mobility aid, have a furry little companion with you, a part of the LGBT+ community or just hoping for someone willing to take a chance on displaying your art, we welcome all of you and are so very excited to meet you all!
