This is one of the Bridgwater Circle series of paintings. The image was taken at the back of the Morrisons supermarket. Evidence of a bygone use of the land not far from the canal bank. I am sure it is something to do with the canal and possibly the Great Western Railway. The large metal structure with a big cast iron ring painted in thick black paint surrounded by thick hedge vegetation at the time of the photograph. Bridgwater, Somerset has a huge industrial legacy in Brick and Tile manufacture using first boats in its tidal river, then joining up to the canal network and national railways.
Fascinated with our hidden history, preserved old structures are precious in my book. Wonderful that although most of this history has faded from memory, parts survive that we can look at and marvel at and guess what they were for and even seek out information to aid understanding, to solve the mystery to marvel at our industrial past. I liked the colours of the verdant green leaves, the black, the rust orange and the blue of the sky reflected in the glossy surface and the whole alien view through the ring.
