One of my ashtray images from the Bridgwater Circle series of paintings photo captured while walking in Blake gardens, Bridgwater, Somerset. A black plastic bin with a moulded decorated top used to stub out cigarettes situated in the centre of the park.
The photo not only captured the attractive pattern but also, as I worked on bringing out its colours, the dull grey turned to a lovely royal blue, giving the picture a fetching blue velvet look. It does amaze me that artistry can still be found in the design of our modern street furniture even in these less decorated and minimalist times. The work of council decisions and unsung heroes that brighten up our everyday lives.
I hope one day the artist that designed and/or originated these bin moulds will see this tribute to their work – hope they like it.
