This is one of the Bridgwater Circle series of paintings, an image captured while walking the Avenues of Bridgwater, Somerset. Looking through the wrought iron gate from the pavement, I caught sight of the lovely colour of this almost fluorescent green moss between the red Bridgwater brickwork. Bridgwater, for many years, made its living from the brick and tile industry.
I have a fascination with our town’s history in general and bricks have held my life together on many levels. One thing I have always championed was the bricks in the Tate, a controversial artwork installation many years ago. Over the years I have often been asked my opinion as an artist on this particular work, my response was always to say I thought it great that it elevated the humble brick to an art object and had the brick talked about in all walks of life for many years.
The painting is straightforward bricks and green moss with the wrought iron gate circles looking like a pair of spectacles, focusing our attention onto the texture and colour contrast of this piece.
