A Bridgwater Circle series painting, image photographed while walking in the old Trinity Church garden between Broadway & Taunton Road/St Mary’s Road Bridgwater, Somerset. Walking around the golden moss-covered path, I was delighted to capture this rubbish bin with a re-cycle logo ashtray on the top.
Re-cycling has always been part of my ethos, in fact, re-use, re purpose, not throwing away has been with me all my life – brought up with ‘mend and make do’ – only now has it become fashionable. We even have programmes on the TV – in years past you were looked at as crazy, an eccentric. Luckily for me, more acceptable if an artist, you get some leeway as people expect artists to be a bit out there!
I have made discoveries in painting this beautiful image. See how purple this piece looks, but not a drop of purple used – the colours are pink and blue, creating a purple impression. Who designs our street furniture? Nameless and faceless people who receive no credit or criticism yet add such ambiance, colour, texture to our everyday lives? With my ashtray group of paintings, it has amused me that such beauty can be found in the most unlikely and disdained objects.
