This is one of the Bridgwater Circle series of paintings taken at Castle street Bridgwater, Somerset.
I was taken with the drain cover in its rich rust brown and its thin strip lines, and it proudly proclaimed it was Hepworth. I could see what it meant, having not surprisingly studied Barbara Hepworth’s work during my fine art sculpture degree. She was a giant in the sculpture world, which was amazing for a woman and, understandably, she was an early role model for me. Much of Hepworth’s work was rounded pierced shapes with wires strung tightly in the space created. It seemed fitting to put Barbara in the centre of this painting, so in the handle I have painted a mini portrait taken from a photo of her inside one of her larger sculptures.
